TOOLS

The Problem

For publication projects, it is crucial to produce a final design that translates well to printed media. This includes image specifications, correct typography choices, layout skills as well as software knowledge, file setup, export and even correct paper stock choice. This project challenged those skills with the limitations of small run print production and self-binding/publication methods.

On top of all that, capturing the specific mood and style of the surf, skate and music culture and translating it into a legible publication while keeping the chaotic, grungyy visuals.

The Challenge

A crucial part of design is having the skills to be able to design for a specific purpose. This means not only designing something that looks good but being able to work and function as intended.

This project attempts to creatively link form and function through a visually striking publication that works perfectly when printed.

The Solution

The solution was to explore different print and binding methods to create a self-produced magazine. The home binding added to the hand made look and feel of the design and was achieved through constant altering of the layout, size and imagery.

Exploring different visual styles of the surf, skate and music industry helped translate all three cultures into one publication.

The overall grunge/street tone of the magazine linked all three cultures and also gave the overall feel a Newcastle flavour.
